Introduction

The Royal Bournemouth High Dependency Head & Neck Ward is a specialist hospital ward within University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust at Royal Bournemouth Hospital.

The high-dependency unit (HDU) is dedicated to patients with head and neck conditions, typically linked to: Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) surgery, Oral and maxillofacial surgery, and Head and neck cancer treatment.

Teknoglass Solutions LLP was nominated by the architect Kendall Kingscott, with whom we have collaborated on numerous hospital glazing projects, to design, manufacture, and install a series of acoustic double-glazed internal partition screens between the nursing stations and patient rooms.

Between Glass Blinds

Part of the brief was to incorporate a privacy solution that maintains patient dignity. Our approach was to install integral lift-and-tilt Venetian blinds within the glazing cavity, positioned between the glass panes. This fully enclosed system, including the blinds and controls, provides an ideal hygienic solution for healthcare environments.

The lift-and-tilt mechanism is operated via manual slider controls located on either side of the glass. The right-hand control raises and lowers the blinds, while the left-hand control adjusts the tilt of the slats, allowing for either clear visibility or complete privacy. The controls are mirrored on both sides of the double-glazed unit, enabling operation from inside and outside the room.
